Nov 1, 2018

When you stay at Skytop Lodge, there’s so much to do and see without leaving the resort. But if you’re up for a day trip, these are some of our favorite Pennsylvania mountains to see in the winter. Before you set out on your adventure, check to make sure the parks and trails are open.

Pocono Mountains

The counties of Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne make up what is known as the Pocono Mountains, which is where Skytop Lodge is located. When you visit the Poconos, you’ll be met with forests, lakes, and scenic views worth exploring.

Camelback Mountain is the highest peak of the Pocono Mountains and offers many different vantage points at the top. The Indian Trail, a 1.3-mile loop from the summit within Big Pocono State Park provides spectacular views of the Delaware Water Gap.

The Pocono Mountains offer many abundant ski slopes in the winter. Seeing the mountains blanketed in snow is a sight that brings thousands of tourists to the area every year.

Delaware Water Gap

This national recreation area is about a 45-minute drive from Skytop Lodge. Dingmans Falls is a popular sight within the area. Visitors can take one of the many hiking trails through the mountains, or take a scenic drive through the park. During the winter months, check the website ahead of time for road and trail closures.

For those who want to travel more than an hour from Skytop Lodge, the following destinations are also worth checking out.

Appalachian Mountains

Hiking the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania is known for its flat rocky ridges. You can find hundreds of hikes within the Appalachian Trail. Most notably is the day hike up to Hawk Rock Overlook at Cove Mountain. You’ll find the trailhead in the small town of Duncannon.

Pine Creek Gorge

Known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Pine Creek Gorge is located in northern Pennsylvania near downtown Wellsboro. This geological wonder is carved into the Allegheny Plateau. The gorge is about 50 miles long and 1,000 feet deep and splits Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks.

Along with taking in the stunning views, visitors can hike, camp, and snowmobile through the mountains.
