Our Favorite Things to Do During the Summer in the Poconos

Jul 24, 2020

The Pocono Mountains are some of the most beautiful in the region. For those who are looking to get away and have some fun, this area can be ideal. If you love densely forested terrain to hike in, sparkling lakes to explore, and hidden treasures around every corner, summer in the Poconos is be a must-see location.

Many people talk about what the area offers, but what specific things can you do during the summer in the Poconos? Here at Skytop Lodge, we want to ensure you have the best things to do in the area.

#1: Hit the Water Hard

The entire family will find the waterways in the Poconos the ideal way to cool down. The area can get quite hot during the summer, but you will not feel it when you are enjoying your time on the various rivers here. There are a few fantastic spots to check out during your trip.

  • One of the best family experiences is to go tubing. The Delaware River has a number of spots you can stop to have some fun with this. There are various skill level options available throughout this area.
  • Whitewater rafting is best for those who want a challenge and adventure. You can book a trip with one of the numerous whitewater rafting companies in the vicinity to really get into it.  Lehigh Gorge State Park is one of the best choices.
  • Another option for the family is river tours. Some companies offer these experiences for a small or larger group. Both whitewater and still water trips are available. If you prefer to adventure with a guide, this is one of the best ways to do it.

#2: Golfing

As the best place to stay if you want to golf, Skytop Lodge is easily located near some of the top-rated golf courses in The Poconos. We offer an award-winning golf course right here on property featuring 6,656 yards of play. You will find tree-lined fairways here along with smaller greens and some tough bunkers to challenge you.

There are other golf courses in the area as well, including Tanglewood Golf Course, Newfoundland Golf Course, and Buck Hill Golf Club. Any of these are worth booking a tee time, even if it is just for a few hours during your summer in The Poconos.

#3: Do Some Horseback Riding

Even if you have never spent any time on the back of a horse, now is the ideal time to do so. The Poconos is full of incredible trails, many of which you can do on horseback. A number of stables are available, offering guided and non-guided tours of the area. You may want to check out Fernwood Stables, which are a bit of a drive, but worth it. You can explore much of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on horseback if you like. Mountain Creek Riding Stable is close to the lodge. It also offers the training you need to feel confident on the back of a horse for the first time.

#4: Challenge Yourself and Your Family

One of the ways we create fun at Skytop Lodge is by providing you with access to the Adventure Center. This is the best place for family fun and corporate events (if you are traveling with your team, you want this type of team-building atmosphere). In short, you can engage in a number of high-adventure fun challenges. This includes our Treetop Adventure Course (available as a full or half course), which takes you high up in the trees 50 feet off the ground. There are dozens of different experiences to be had here. Also, consider the zipline. It is an incredible way to see the entire area from a whole new view.

Other options include:

  • Family-favorite paintball
  • Archery Tag (it is not as painful as it sounds)
  • Rock climbing

#5: Explore Some Hiking Trails

At Skytop Lodge, we have some of the most incredible hiking trails right in our own backyard. Some of our favorite trails include the West Rim Trail, Upper Falls Trail, and Leavitt Falls Trail. Here, you will experience breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains as well as flowing waterfalls that make wonderful backdrops for photos.

There is also a private beach here if you are looking for a little sand and sun during your stay. The kids will love digging in the dirt and splashing in the cool water. Rent a kayak or canoe for a touch of added fun.

#6: Explore the Food

One of the things you will find is that Skytop Lodge doesn’t let you go hungry. There are a number of different restaurants right here to enjoy, including Lakeview and Windsor, some of the most popular options. Both attract not only guests but also locals looking for fine cuisine and true farm-to-table elegance.

Other restaurants exist here as well, including The Taproom and The Library Lounge. When you want to sit and relax with a good drink, these two locations are an excellent choice. Callaway’s and Corner Roast are a few more options for those who want to get something quick so they can be on their way to explore the region. The surrounding area offers even more mom-and-pop restaurants and fine dining to fill just about any need.
