Improve your Game at our Poconos Golf Course

Aug 29, 2018

Need some respite from your daily grind? Come improve your golf game at our award-winning course with 6,656 yards of serene greens, tree-lined fairways, and rolling terrain. It’s just over a two-hour drive from New York City or Philadelphia to the ultimate golfer’s paradise high up in the Poconos. To fully appreciate all that Skytop Lodge has to offer, you must know that we built the golf course first. The land and location was so ideal, we knew it had to be done right.

Back in the early 1920s, Skytop Lodge was just an inkling in the minds of four friends who had just embraced a newfound enthusiasm for life after World War I. After their lives had been rocked, they wanted to appreciate life and have some fun. But where could they let loose and riff about the future? Nowhere seemed as satisfying as high up in the Poconos where you were far away from it all and surrounded by natural beauty. So, these four friends—John Stubbs, Frederic Smith, Earl Mayne, and Sam Packer—decided to build the ultimate oasis of their dreams in the form of a grand resort overlooking the mountains.

As a reflection of the spirit of the time and an indication of some very thoughtful businessman, the golf course was built first. A ritzy landscape architect was hired to decide on the perfect location for optimal views. They set out to build a challenging course for both casual and serious players. The 2,500 acres of abandoned farm land was transformed into a golfer’s paradise with strategically placed water and bunkers in an idyllic setting.

Today, golfers come to the Skytop Lodge golf course to not only improve their game, but also improve their mental well-being. As is with most courses, ours takes tremendous focus and effort, but there’s something special about being high up in the mountains. As you become completely immersed in the task at hand—posture, position, swing, foresight—everything else seems to drift away. This is exactly what those four friends had in mind.
