It’s not just a song: The hills really are alive with the sound of music in the Poconos, where local theatres and playhouses offer year-round live entertainment. From Rodgers & Hammerstein classics to modern musicals, revues and Shakespeare sonnets, there’s something for every member of your family.
Here’s a sneak peek at the theatre offerings in northeastern Pennsylvania this fall.
Murder and Mystery at Skytop
Get ready for a night of intrigue, revelry and good old-fashioned murder – just in time for Halloween. On Saturday, October 28, Skytop Lodge in the Poconos is hosting “Scandal, “an annual murder mystery dinner with single-malt tastings and a solitary killing. Don your powdered wig and Venetian mask for the Billionaires’ Club Annual Masquerade Ball. Unfortunately, one of the guests won’t make it through the show; and you’ll be tasked with questioning suspects and ultimately sniffing out the murderer. If you love Sherlock and Elementary, or you’re hooked on the ID channel (Investigation Discovery), this is the show for you!
Putting on the Ritz
The Ritz Company Players started in 1973 with a copy of the Brigadoon script, and a dream. They run a handful of plays from May through September in a historic vaudeville-era theater. This year’s August shows include Bye Bye Birdie (junior edition) and Pull the Other One, a comedy about a suspicious mother-in-law who discovers that her son-in-law’s pen pal is, in fact, a man – wearing a dress.
Shows at the Shawnee
Located in a rebuilt 1904 playhouse in Shawnee on Delaware, The Shawnee Playhouse presents family-friendly musicals, short plays and holiday spectacles throughout the year. The fall 2017 season starts with the new Frank Sinatra revue, One More for My Baby, followed by the winner of the 2016 Shawnee Original Playwright Series contest for full-length plays. Other productions this season include Legally Gray, about a couple who applies for Social Security early only to have their grown daughter and aging mother move back in, and three holiday shows including the famous Nutcracker Ballet.
The Sherman Presents
The Sherman Theater is known more for tribute bands and B-rate headliners, but this historic Stroudsburg concert venue also hosts the occasional rock musical and arts festival. Look for Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story through August 13, plus a major arts celebration on September 8-10 and a kid-friendly Harvest Fest on September 23.
