How to Plan the Perfect Poconos Ski Vacation

A ski vacation is more than a holiday: It’s an opportunity for adventure. Family bonding. Quality time. Love. Whether you’re a member of your local snowboarding club or a nervous first-time skier, Skytop Lodge in the Poconos provides a majestic wonderland perfect for winter sports. Enjoy leisurely cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on our 5,500-acre property, or head to West Mountain and tackle on of our four dedicated ski slopes.

What to Bring

Most skiing essentials seem like a no-brainer. However, if you’re new to winter sports or hail from sunnier climes, this list can be a lifesaver.

  • Hat
  • Sunglasses and goggles
  • Sunblock – It’s easier than you’d think to get burned on the slopes, so SPF 30+ is a must.
  • Neck warmer and face protection – Because windburn is a real thing.
  • Lots of layers – Bring thermal tops and bottoms, plus lots of warm socks, for under your ski gear.
  • Waterproof ski jacket and pants – You might look like Randy in a Christmas Story (“I can’t put my arms down!”), but you’ll be grateful for the extra padding and warmth while on the slopes.
  • Ski gloves
  • Water bottle
  • Equipment: This includes boots and skis, helmet, poles, snowboard and any other sports necessities, unless you’re renting them on the slopes.

Snow Time to Wait

Even the most experienced skiers have something to learn. That’s why many ski and snowboard instructors have their proverbial dance cards packed well before the powder. If you’re interested in booking private or group lessons, schedule instruction well in advance. Skytop Lodge offers snowboarding instruction for ages 7+ and a ski school with 50-minute educational classes for ages four and up. Lessons are structured based on experience level, with classes for beginners, advanced beginners and intermediate skiers. Private and semi-private lessons are also available. Reservations are required.

Safety on the Slopes

Skiing safety should be a top priority when visiting the Poconos for winter recreation. The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) recommends skiing with a partner, especially if you’re a first timer. While there’s no legal requirement to wear a helmet, head protection is also suggested. Studies in the British Medical Journal found that the risk of general head injury decreases 35% when your noggin’ is covered. Once you’re suited up for skiing, follow the NSAA’s Smart Style rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable vacation in the Poconos.

  1. Start Small – Work your way up. Build your skills.
  2. Make a Plan – Every feature. Every time.
  3. Always Look – Before you drop.
  4. Respect – The features and other users.
  5. Take it Easy – Know your limits. Land on your feet.

Skiing in the Pocono Mountains can be incredibly rewarding. The views from West Mountain at Skytop Lodge are phenomenal, with emerald green pine forests and snowy white peaks for miles. The powder is finely packed and the slopes well-groomed. Plan in advance and stay safe on the slopes to ensure that you have the perfect Poconos ski vacay.
