Tall Trees Trail
Level: Very Rugged
Near the southern border of Skytop’s estate, this 1.33-mile loop trail was created in 2008. There are 2 stream crossings over the Leavitt Branch (on big, steppingstones, with ropes for support), and a steep uphill section across the stream (with ropes). Some of Skytop’s largest trees can be seen at close range along this trail: sugar maple, tulip tree, white ash, white pine, shagbark hickory, red oak, white oak, chestnut oak, hemlock, rhododendron, and others. The trail begins behind Leavitt Lodge (the employees’ housing), about 1-11/2 miles south of Skytop Lodge off Route 390, Winter wrens, woodland jumping mice, Louisiana waterthrushes, and other uncommon animals inhabit the undisturbed forests and streams surrounding this trail.
