The history of Skytop is interesting. What’s more interesting though, are the countless histories that have been made here since we opened in 1928. Skytop has seen so many memories, moments, adventures, and experiences over the years, and families, friends, and couples come here daily to create new ones.
But everything begins somewhere, and Skytop’s story starts on the mountain summit in 1925 where John Stubbs, Frederic Smith, Earl Mayne and Sam Packer envisioned a grand resort on the peak of a high plateau in the Poconos. They purchased eight tracts of land totaling 2,500 acres three miles north of the town of Canadensis. Quickly, they hired a landscape architect to select the ideal location for the lodge and golf course, and to ultimately make their vision a reality.
They broke ground and began construction. The Main Lodge was completed within three years. It was built to reflect the beauty of its surroundings. Stones and woods found on the property were used in construction. With time, more of the area was transformed. In 1930 a dam was completed and the lake was enlarged to its present size. Later, cottages were built and the 2,000-acre Goose Pond area was acquired to create a 5,500 Pocono Mountains playground with hiking, skiing, swimming, and new adventures, surrounded by places of quiet beauty and restful charm.
Through the years Skytop has become more than just a Poconos vacation destination to its many devoted guests, most from families that have been attending for generations. What keeps them coming back? It could be the spring flowers, summer adventures, fall foliage, or winter wonders. Then again, it could also be the blend of old world charm and character, timeless attention to detail, impeccable service, modern conveniences and amenities, and, of course, the feeling like you’re on top of the world. Come on up. You deserve it.
